The Marvel Cinematic Universe (designated Earth-199999 in the Marvel Universe) – abbreviated MCU – is a fictional universe where several Marvel Studios productions occur. The films, all based on characters from Marvel Comics, are grouped into so-called phases, each ending with an Avengers film. The series started in 2008 with Jon Favreau’s Iron Man. The most striking features of these films are the contextual anecdotes and references to the other films in the universe.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe was created by Kevin Feige, who has been a producer on every film so far. With Marvel’s The Avengers, the MCU became the third most successful film, with box office takings of around $1.5 billion. The MCU’s biggest competitors are the 20th Century Fox X-Men universe and Warner’s DC universe.

Since 2013, Marvel Studios has also been producing its own T.V. series, which are part of the MCU. Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., a series centered around Agent Phil Coulson’s experiences following Marvel’s The Avengers, launched in September of that year. Later that same year, Marvel Studios also signed a series deal with streaming portal Netflix for multiple series. The first series, Marvel’s Daredevil, aired on April 10, 2015. The collaboration with Netflix was terminated in 2019.

In February 2015, it was officially announced that Spider-Man: Homecoming would be the first Spider-Man movie set in the MCU. In August 2019, multiple sources announced that the contract between Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios would not be renewed. The deal included a five-film agreement concluded with Spider-Man: Far From Home. This caused a huge media outcry, after which, according to rumors, both Sony and Disney would reportedly want to negotiate again. In September 2019, a new agreement was reached, including two new films. The first is said to be the third film in the MCU Spider-Man trilogy, released in the summer of 2021. The other film is still unknown. However, it is said to be a team-up film in the MCU.

Since 2015, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been the most financially successful film franchise ever. With the film Avengers: Age of Ultron, Marvel Studios left the previous record holder Harry Potter behind.

On December 15, 2017, Disney CEO Bob Iger announced that the X-Men, Deadpool, and Fantastic Four would also become part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Tony Stark/Iron Man

Tony Stark is an engineering genius and CEO of Stark Industries. This is his father’s legacy, which enjoyed great success primarily with manufacturing and selling weapons to the military. After the events of the first Iron Man movie, however, Tony Stark turns his back on this morally questionable industry and instead designs the first Iron Man armor made of an almost indestructible metal alloy, which he continues to develop over the years and his film appearances. After a few solo adventures pitting him against his mentor Obadiah Stane and the dangerous, revenge-seeking Ivan Vanko/Whiplash, he helps to form the Avengers. Together, they will defeat more powerful enemies and take on the seemingly invincible Thanos. A battle in which Tony Stark sacrifices his life to save humanity and the rest of the universe.

Steve Rogers/Captain America

Steven Grant ‘Steve’ Rogers was born as a sickly weak child in 1918, but with the help of a government experiment, he could transform himself into a super soldier as a young man. An experiment that could not be repeated – Rogers/Captain America thus remains the first and the last of his kind. He fights the dangerous HYDRA leader Red Skull in World War 2, is frozen in the ice of Antarctica, and 70 years later is discovered and thawed. Arriving here and now, he joins the other Avengers against the evil god Loki. He must also take on his own secret organization, S.H.I.E.L.D., infiltrated by HYDRA agents. After battling the Artificial Intelligence called Ultron, he even uses his iconic shield and powers against his own allies. After the fight against Thanos, he retires with his great love.

Thor Odinson

The God of Thunder, son of Odin and Frigga, brother of Loki and Hela, and heir to the Asgardian throne, carries the mythical and powerful hammer Mjölnir. A weapon that only those who prove themselves worthy may use. Too bad that when we meet Thor, he appears as a spoiled and arrogant heir to the throne, banished by his father to Earth for an indefinite period. He meets and falls in love with scientist Jane Foster and learns humility and self-sacrifice there. Only afterward does he regain his powers. He can defeat his villainous brother Loki but has to face him several times with the rest of the Avengers. After that, he fights against even more powerful opponents: the dark elf Malekith, his vengeful sister Hela and the god-killer Gorr have it in for the god and his friends. Thor is one of the few original Avengers still active.

Dr. Bruce Banner/Hulk

Dr. Banner is a nuclear physicist who believed he was working on a project that could make soldiers immune to radiation. In reality, however, he was contributing to breeding new super soldiers for the nefarious General Thunderbolt Ross. Banner even experiments on himself, eventually transforming him into the Hulk – A rampaging, rage-filled monster that no conventional weapon can stop and Banner cannot control at first. This modern-day Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hide first faced another monster in the form of Emil Blonsky, aka Abomination, before he came to the Avengers’ aid. He fights side by side with Thor and, of course, faces Thanos and his minions. We can also expect an appearance in the Disney+ series She-Hulk (trash show – only my opinion!).

Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow

As a young girl, Romanoff was trained to become a super spy and one of the deadliest killers in the world. At first, she works as an agent for the K.G.B. but is targeted by the secret organization S.H.I.E.L.D. and Clint Barton/Hawkeye. The latter offers to spare her life if she defects to the U.S. side. Since then, she has worked for the U.S. secret organization and initially represents the first female Avenger member. She supervises Iron Man and Hulk and is an exceptional hand-to-hand combat specialist. She makes her first appearance in ‘Iron Man 2’, and since then, she fights alongside the Avengers and gets to go on her first solo spy adventure in the ‘Black Widow’ film, which also explores her own past in greater depth. In ‘Avengers: Endgame’ she also sacrifices her life, but in the Marvel universe, dead men always live longer. Plus, there is now a multiverse with many different Black Widow versions, so a return is not out of the question.

Clint Barton/Hawkeye

The S.H.I.E.L.D. agent is the best sniper in the world—most of the time, Nick Fury assigns him to carry out dangerous operations. In the first Thor movie, for example, he guards Thor’s hammer, and in ‘Avengers,’ he guards the Tessarekt – the latter, however, less successfully. Even if he can win some victories with the other Avengers, he must live with some traumatic defeats. For example, he loses his family in between but ultimately saves them from final destruction. Recently, he was allowed to complete his first series mission in his own Disney+ series Hawkeye, where he is also already training the next generation of super archers.

James ‘Rhodey’ Rhodes/War Machine/Iron Patriot

Tony Stark’s best friend and military contact for Stark Industries is an experienced pilot and sniper with dozens of successful missions. Throughout the MCU story, he, too, is outfitted with Iron Man armor, initially serving as a military figurehead but later joining the Avengers. However, during internal disputes between the various superheroes, he is seriously injured and is henceforth paraplegic. Thanks to the advanced technology of Stark Industries, however, he learns to walk again and can use the Iron Man armor for future heroic deeds.

James Buchanan ‘Bucky’ Barnes/The Winter Soldier/White Wolf

As childhood friends of Steve Rogers/Captain America, they fight together in World War 2. However, Bucky has an accident during a mission. Declared dead by his government, however, he is brainwashed by the enemy organization HYDRA and trained to become a super-killing machine called the Winter Soldier. Similar to Steve Rogers, Bucky is frozen over the decades, but in between he is always thawed out to carry out assassinations on behalf of HYDRA. Only his old friend Steve can finally stop him and bring back memories of his old life. After the battle against Thanos, he fights against a new threat together with Sam Wilson, aka The Falcon, in the Disney+ series ‘The Falcon and the Winter Solider.’

Sam Wilson/The Falcon/the new Captain America

We get to know Sam Wilson as a former soldier who helps war veterans get back on their feet until he fights with Steve Rogers and his special flight suit against the secret organization S.H.I.E.L.D., which has been infiltrated by the Nazi organization Hydra. Since then, the two have been inseparable, enduring various other adventures and later even having to fight some fellow Avengers. After the events with Thanos and when Steve Rogers finally says goodbye to his shield and existence as a super soldier, Wilson steps into the oversized foot stomps. He may work in the future as Captain America.

Wanda Maximoff/Scarlett Witch

Wanda Maximoff is a young woman whose parents were killed in an explosion in her homeland Sokovia. A second grenade would have killed her, and her brother had the weapon not malfunctioned. That grenade came from Stark Industries, initially making Wanda a fierce opponent of the billionaire in the Iron Man costume and the Avengers. Only after defeating the Ultron AI does she join the Avengers, but she can barely keep her powers under control. When Thanos murders her great love Vision, she even takes a small town captive with her powers unawares in the Disney+ series ‘WandaVision.’ She creates an idyllic family life here, which quickly turns out to be an illusion. She then fights Doctor Strange to get to another universe where she can live happily with her children.

Vision

A robot that, with the help of Tony Stark, Dr. Bruce Banner, and Thor, receives the consciousness of Tony Stark’s electronic assistant J.A.R.V.I.S. Only thanks to him can the Avengers defeat the enemy A.I. called Ultron and stop his sinister world-destroying plan. After this victory, Vision enters into a relationship with Wanda Maximoff. Still, it is short-lived: he is killed by Thanos but can resurrect in another form in the Disney+ series ‘WandaVision.’

Scott Lang/Ant-Man

Scott Lang was once a successful electrical engineer but robbed his corrupt boss and ended up in prison for it. After his release, he wants to get his life back on track and see his daughter regularly. He gets a new chance when famous scientist Dr. Hank Pym – the original Ant-Man – hires him to steal Ant-Man technology from his former company, which Pym once co-founded.

This is to prevent the invention from being misused for sinister plots. Scott is given the Ant-Man suit to shrink to ant size and carry out the mission. Later, the mischievous thief can also perform other heroic deeds and assist Captain America and the Avengers. The hero is still active and will make further appearances in the MCU. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, for example.

Peter Parker/Spider-Man

After being bitten by a genetically modified spider, hyperintelligent schoolboy Peter Parker gains superhuman strength and can crawl along walls and ceilings like a spider. With a sixth sense, he can also sense approaching danger. After his uncle, who raised him, is murdered by a criminal, he uses these abilities as a hero for a good cause. At first, he is recruited by billionaire Tony Stark to fight against seemingly treacherous Avengers, but afterward, Parker still wants to join the famous team of heroes. However, he must deal with minor street criminals before proving himself worthy. After the events surrounding Thanos and ‘Endgame,’ Spider-Man does a lot of good but also messes up many things in the Marvel universe, which has tragic consequences.

Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel

Carol Danvers is an Air Force pilot who comes into contact with an alien species called the Kree. An encounter that gives her superpowers. Since then, she has had superhuman strength, can fly, and can anticipate the movements and attacks of her enemies. In addition, she can absorb photonic explosions and energy, making her an essential weapon in the fight against the intergalactic warlord Thanos.

Doctor Strange

Stephen Strange was a talented neurosurgeon before a car accident destroyed the nerves in his hands, and he could no longer eat without help. Because conventional Western medicine no longer helped him, he went to a mystical school that introduced him to the art of magic. Strange eventually becomes a master of the Sanctum Sanctorum in New York City after defeating an alien threat. He also helps the Avengers defeat Thanos. Recently, he had to face a possessed and diabolical Wanda Maximoff, being allowed to travel through different universes and turn himself into a zombie.

Black Panther

After siding with Iron Man in the Avengers vs. Avengers battle, King T’Challa, aka Black Panther, returns to his homeland of Wakanda to claim his inheritance as the rightful king after his father’s death. However, the mercenary Erik Killmonger intervenes, who also seems to have a claim to the throne. The warrior and king can also successfully fend off this threat before he battles against the all-powerful Thanos in his greatest battle and joins the Avengers.
