Soccer is a one of many ball sports where two teams compete with each other with the target to shoot more goals than the other team. The playtime is generally 90 minutes (2 Halftimes) plus additional time and possibly overtime. A team consists of eleven players - one of them is the goalkeeper. It is allowed to play the ball with your whole body except your arms and hands; you are playing it most of the time just with your feets. Only the goalkeeper is allowed to use his arms and hands (only in the penalty area).
The success of soccer relies on its simplicity. The expenses for the equipment are relatively low, whereas it even became so popular in developing countries, and it is quite easy to understand for newcomers to the sport. Secondly they don't make so much goals comparatively to other ball sports, which increases the value of a goal and makes the game more exciting.
Soccer arose in Great Britain in the second half of the 19 century, and spread out to continental Europe and other continents in 1880 and 1890. It is worldwide the most popular team sport. In contrast to other sports (e.g. handball) the top teams in soccer developed mostly in large cities that had the required complex infrastructure.
