The automobile, commonly known as car, is a multi-track motor vehicle which serves to transport people or freights. The world vehicle population is steadily growing and was at 1.015 billion vehicles in 2010. In 2011 over 80 million cars worldwide were built.
In 1769 the Frenchman Nicholas Cugnot built a steam car - the first vehicle actually witnessed built which wasn’t based on muscle power or an outer force (like wind). In 1863 Etienne Lenoir took a drive with his "Hippomobile" for about 11 miles; it was the first vehicle with an internal combustion engine. However, the year of birth of the modern internal combustion engine was 1886. The Tricycle created by the German inventor Karl Benz obtained a lot of attention which led to a series production of the Tricycle. The new cars detached almost in all areas the carriages that were pulled by draft animals simple because they were faster, could drive farther and brought up a better performance.
Automobile is an adjective-derived noun. It arose from the French term of a compressed air-powered tram "voiture automobile", which means automotive cart. The term is derived from the ancient greek word "αὐτός autós" (itself) and conduced to distinguish the cars from the carriages that where pulled by horses.
